Wingspan

An engine-building game with beautiful bird art, in which you run a wildlife preserve. The more bird cards you place in a habitat (forest, grassland, wetland), the stronger that habitat's basic action becomes, and the birds already placed there trigger one after another, so a single action gives you several effects at once.

Rules

1. Setup

Each player takes a personal board (forest / grassland / wetland habitats), five starting bird cards, and five food tokens, then trades between them as they like to settle on a starting hand. The end-of-round goal tiles are revealed at the same time.

2. Turn flow

Each turn you take one of play a bird in a habitat, gain food, lay eggs, or draw bird cards, working in order from the left space of the habitat row, and the birds already placed there trigger along with it. The more birds you pack into one habitat, the more birds a single action sets off.

3. Key rules

Each habitat is tied to a different action (forest = gain food, grassland = lay eggs, wetland = draw cards), and bird cards carry powers that trigger at different times, such as when played, when you gain food, when you lay eggs, or at the end of a round, so you can design combos that feed into each other.

4. End condition

After four rounds, add up the end-of-round goal points, bird card points, stored food and cards, egg points, and nest bonuses.

💡 Master tip

Work out in advance which habitat fits the round goals and place your birds there, and pick up combo birds that trigger when you gain food first. Rather than leaning on one habitat, fill all three in balance so your actions do not dry up late in the game.
