A large tile-laying package that gathers the Carcassonne base game together with 11 expansions, including the essential Inns & Cathedrals and Traders & Builders. Mixing expansions in and out gives you a different difficulty and a different strategy every time, so one box keeps going for a long while without buying anything more.
A compilation that puts base “Carcassonne” and several expansions in one box. The rules themselves are the base game's; the real question is which expansion to add and when. Throw them all in at once and your first game collapses.
Place a tile → place a follower → score completed features, plus the scoring for roads, cities, monasteries and farmers, are the same as in “Carcassonne.” For the base rules, read the Carcassonne guide. This page is about what is in the box and what to add first.
There is no single “Big Box”
Each release year holds a different set of expansions. Read the expansion list on the back of your box first. The tables below show the widely reported contents, which may not match the copy you bought.
| Edition | Expansions included (as reported) |
|---|---|
| Big Box 6 (2017) | Base game + Inns & Cathedrals + Traders & Builders + 7 mini expansions (The Flying Machines · The Messengers · The Ferries · The Gold Mines · Mage & Witch · The Robbers · Corn Circles II) |
| Big Box 7 (2021) | Base game + The River + Inns & Cathedrals + Traders & Builders + 7 mini expansions + The Abbot |
| 2022 / 2025 editions | Base game + The River + The Abbot + Inns & Cathedrals + Traders & Builders + The Flying Machines · The Messengers · The Ferries · The Gold Mines · Mage & Witch · The Robbers · Corn Circles |
The River and The Abbot are treated as part of the base game in recent editions. The Carcassonne guide is written for that setup too.
With every expansion in, the stack passes 200 tiles and a game runs over two hours. The rules also tangle with each other, so a new player has no idea what to aim for.
| Expansion | Key change |
|---|---|
| The River | River tiles shape the opening landscape. You may not lay the river so that it turns back on itself |
| The Abbot | Use one follower as an abbot, placed on a monastery or a garden. You may take it back for points at any time |
| Inns & Cathedrals | A road with an inn scores 2 points per tile when completed and 0 if it is not. A city with a cathedral scores 3 points per tile when completed and 0 if it is not |
| Traders & Builders | Collect goods tokens (wine, grain, cloth) for an end-game bonus. Extend a feature holding your builder and take another turn. The pig raises your farm scoring |
| The Flying Machines | Send a follower flying to another tile |
| The Messengers | A messenger on the scoreboard gives you special actions |
| The Ferries | Place ferries on lake tiles to change how roads connect |
| The Gold Mines | Collect gold bars and cash them in at the end |
| Mage & Witch | The mage raises a feature's score; the witch halves it |
| The Robbers | Put a robber on another player's scoring track to take a cut of what they score |
| Corn Circles | When a circle tile is placed, everyone must add or take back a follower of a given type |
The easiest mini expansions to start with are The Ferries and The Gold Mines. Short rules, and they hardly interact with anything else. Save Corn Circles for last, since it forces an action on every player.
Yes. The base game is inside, so it is complete on its own — and a better buy than the base game by itself.
Nothing in the rules forbids it, but not for a first game. The stack passes 200 tiles and it runs over two hours.
It depends on the edition and on what you added. The base 7, plus the abbot, plus the builder and pig from Traders & Builders. Check the component list on your box.
It scores 0. An unfinished road normally still scores 1 point per tile, but an inn wipes that out.
Then it is a different edition. Go by the list on the back of your box, and read each expansion's own rulesheet for its rules.

💡 Master tip
Deliberately attaching a cathedral tile to an opponent's huge city turns it into a permanent 0 if they cannot finish it. Unfinished roads and monasteries still score a little at the end of the game, so instead of forcing a feature to completion, taking a follower back at the right moment and reusing it is a good strategy too.
If this one has gotten too easy, try these — same feel, one step up in weight.
