What kind of game is this

Blue Marble Expedition is a separate product from the base Blue Marble, adapted so a 5-year-old can play. Nobody is bankrupted; you buy cities and collect gems, and the first to complete a gem set wins. Instead of building houses, you buy one more gem. A game takes 15 to 30 minutes.

Scope of verification

Component counts and the main rules rest on the owner's rulebook check record and the catalog. City prices, rents, salary amounts and Golden Key card text have no confirmed figures, so they are omitted (⚠️ Unverified). If a ruling is unclear, follow the rulebook in the box.

⚠️ Unverified: the number of gem colours, the count per colour and the number of board spaces have no confirmed record and are not stated.

Setup

  1. 1Unfold the board and place the shuffled Golden Key cards face down.
  2. 2Keep the deed cards and gems in the bank.
  3. 3Each player chooses a pawn and places it on the Start space.
  4. 4Take starting money. With 2 players, take five each of the 10, 5, 2 and 1 Buru coins; with 3 or 4 players, take three each (2 players: 90 Buru in total, 3–4 players: 54 Buru).

⚠️ Unverified: there is no confirmed rule for who starts. Agree on a method, such as the youngest player first.

Taking a turn

  1. 1Roll both dice and move your pawn by the total. (Follow the board's markings for direction. ⚠️ Unverified)
  2. 2If both dice show the same number, roll again — once only.
  3. 3Follow the rule of the space you land on (see the space table below).
  4. 4If you pass or land on Start, collect your salary from the bank.
Roll the diceMatching numbers: roll once more (once only)
Move the total (7) spaces
Landing space?Act according to the space type
Dice showing 3 and 4 mean moving 7 spaces, then following the rule of the space you land on.

Playing with a child

At first, count the spaces together. Telling them up front that the bonus roll happens only once avoids confusion when matching numbers come up.

What each space does

SpaceWhat you do
Empty cityPay the listed price to the bank and take the deed card and the gem marked on that city.
Another player's cityPay the rent shown on the back of the deed to its owner.
Your own cityYou may buy one of the gems marked on that deed for 15 Buru each (gem purchase).
Golden KeyDraw a card and carry it out immediately.
Desert IslandYou are stuck until you roll matching numbers.
Space TravelPay 5 Buru, travel along the space route and return to the board.
StartPassing or landing on it earns a salary from the bank.

⚠️ Unverified: city prices and rents, the salary amount, the effects of individual Golden Key cards, how turns pass while on the Desert Island without matching numbers (including whether there is an escape fee), and where you return from the space route have no confirmed figures or wording and are not stated.

Gem market

The catalog's strategy advice mentions that other players can swap same-colour gems at the gem market, but the exact rule for that space was not confirmed (⚠️ Unverified). Check the rulebook.

How to win

The first player to achieve either of these wins on the spot. The game does not end by bankruptcy.

  • 10 gems of different colours
  • 5 gems of the same colour
10 different coloursAll colours must differ (diagram colours are examples)
or
5 of the same colourOne colour only
Top: 10 different colours. Bottom: 5 of one colour. Either wins the game.

Strategy

  • Five of one colour is usually faster than ten different colours.
  • Grab a city marked with a colour that appears on many cities first, and you can chase that colour.
  • When you are ahead, keep your target colour hidden. If someone else is after the same colour, your gems can be swapped away.

Not the base Blue Marble; edition notes

This is a separate product from the base Blue Marble of the same brand. The base game wins by building and bankrupting opponents; Expedition ends by collecting gems.

The owner's box and rulebook and the manufacturer's play video say ages 5+, while the manufacturer's product page says 7+. This guide follows the physical edition. Whether other print runs use the same rules is unconfirmed (⚠️ Unverified).

Frequently asked questions

Q. How is it different from the base Blue Marble?

The way to win differs. The base game bankrupts opponents; Expedition ends when someone collects gems. Instead of building, you buy one more gem, and a game is a short 15 to 30 minutes.

Q. What happens if I run out of money?

The game does not end by bankruptcy. How a shortfall is handled has no confirmed rule, so check the rulebook (⚠️ Unverified).

Q. If I roll matching numbers, can I keep rolling?

No. Matching numbers give one extra roll, once only.

Q. What do I do when I land on my own city again?

You may buy one of the gems marked on that deed for 15 Buru each.

Q. The recommended age is listed as both 5 and 7.

The owner's box and rulebook and the manufacturer's official play video say 5+. Only the manufacturer's product page says 7+, so online and physical labels differ.

💡 Master tip

Five gems of one colour come faster than ten different colours. Grab the city marked with a colour that appears on many cities first, and you can chase that colour. But if others aim for the same colour you can be swapped out at the gem market, so when you are ahead it is better to hide your colour.
