Identify the edition and components

This guide covers the Toytron and Gemblo renewed edition marked 2–6 players, age 5+, and 20 minutes. The 2019 edition has different mode names, scoring, and endings, so do not mix its rules with this box.

The box contains 100 transparent letter cards, 30 score tokens, one three-minute sand timer, one answer board, and one marker.

Hangul literacy is the central skill

The box says age 5+, but every mode asks players to recognise Hangul pieces and think of Korean words. Pair early readers with an adult or use familiar themes.

Shared rule — combining transparent cards

CconsonantVvowel
Place together or layer
CVsyllableLayering must create a new shape or use
Place consonant and vowel cards together or layer them to form a syllable. A layered pair is valid only when it creates a different consonant, vowel, shape, or use.
  • You may use ordinary consonant-vowel combinations, layered cards, and special cards.
  • A layer that does not change the resulting letter or its use is invalid.
  • The three modes have different setup, scoring, and end conditions. Choose one before setup.

Mode 1 — Add-a-Hint Quiz3–6 players

  1. 1Spread all transparent cards face up in the centre. Set out the sand timer, score tokens, answer board, and marker. Choose the first clue giver.
  2. 2The player to the clue giver's left announces a category. The clue giver secretly writes a related answer on the board and places it face down.
  3. 3Start the three-minute timer. The clue giver uses the transparent cards for word or picture clues but may not spell the answer itself.
  4. 4Each other player may make only one guess. The round ends when someone is correct, everyone has guessed incorrectly, or time expires.

A correct guesser takes 2 tokens. When the answer is found, the clue giver takes 2 for a clue containing a word or 3 for a picture-only clue.

End of game

After scoring, the player to the clue giver's left becomes the new clue giver. End after everyone has given clues once. Most tokens wins; tied players share the win.

Mode 2 — Add-a-Card Word Association2–4 players

Each player takes every card of one colour, shuffles them into a personal deck, and reveals cards by player count: 6 each with two players, 5 each with three, or 4 each with four.

??????2 players: 6 each?????3 players: 5 each????4 players: 4 each
2 syllables=1 · 3=2 · 4=3…
2→13→24→3
Everyone races to form a Korean word of at least two syllables. Score word length minus one, discard every used card, then each player refills only the number of their own cards that were used.
  • Call out as soon as you see a word, then prove it with the revealed cards.
  • The word must use at least one transparent card belonging to an opponent.
  • Discard all used cards. Each player refills from their own deck only for their own cards that were used.
  • End immediately when a personal deck runs out. Each token is +1 point and each card remaining in your deck is -1 point.

Tie-break

If final scores tie, the tied player with more tokens wins. If their token counts also tie, they share the win.

Mode 3 — Add-a-Theme Word Association2–4 players

  1. 1Each player takes every card of one colour. The first theme setter writes and reveals a category, then starts the three-minute timer.
  2. 2Everyone uses only their own colour to make one Korean word related to the category.
  3. 3Stop when time expires. Among valid words, rank players by how many transparent cards they used; equal counts share the same rank and reward.
  4. 4After scoring, pass every card left. The player to the theme setter's left sets the next category.

3 players: 3·2·0320
2 players: 4·242
Rewards by player count. An invalid word or a word unrelated to the category earns no tokens.

End of game

End when someone has at least 8 score tokens. Most tokens wins. Break a tie by tokens earned in the final round; if still tied, share the win.

  • Start by forming simple syllables without layering, then add the layering rule once players are comfortable.
  • In Add-a-Hint, encourage young clue givers to draw with the pieces so imperfect spelling does not stop them participating.
  • In Add-a-Card, watching only your own colour cannot finish a word because at least one opponent card is mandatory.

Rules questions

Q. Do all three modes support two players?

No. Add-a-Hint is for 3–6 players. Add-a-Card and Add-a-Theme are for 2–4 players.

Q. May I build a word only from my own colour in Add-a-Card?

No. The called word must use at least one revealed transparent card belonging to an opponent.

Q. What happens when players use the same number of cards in Add-a-Theme?

They share that rank and each receives the token reward for that rank.

Q. May a player guess more than once in Add-a-Hint?

No. Each player gets one guess per round.

Q. Can I use the 2019 rules with this box?

That is not recommended. The renewed edition changes the three mode names, setup counts, scoring, and endings. Match the rules to the box first.

💡 Master tip

All three modes reward seeing how layered pieces can create a new letter or use. Learn simple side-by-side syllables first, then add layering and special cards. In Add-a-Card, every word must include at least one opponent card.
