4 Board Game Rules People Often Get Wrong

Who discards cards when someone rolls a 7?

Only players holding more than seven resource cards discard half, rounded down. A player with nine cards discards four; a player with exactly seven discards none. The active player then moves the robber and steals one random resource card from one opponent with a settlement or city beside the robber’s new hex.

Common mistake: Making a player with exactly seven cards discard, or rounding an odd hand up.

Can you retrieve a joker and put it on your rack?

No. Replace the tile represented by the joker, then use that joker immediately in a new valid set during the same turn. You must also play at least one tile from your rack that turn, and you cannot retrieve a joker before completing your initial meld.

Common mistake: Keeping the retrieved joker on the rack or retrieving one before the initial meld.

Do you take two nobles if you meet both requirements?

No. You may receive only one noble tile per turn. If you qualify for more than one, choose one. Count only permanent bonuses from development cards, not gem tokens in hand. A noble visit happens automatically at the end of the turn and cannot be declined.

Common mistake: Counting gem tokens toward a noble or taking every noble whose requirement is met.

Do tied players split the money at a casino?

No. Players tied for the same number of dice are all removed from that casino. Rank the remaining players again and award the highest banknote first. This means a player with just one die can move up and receive the second banknote.

Common mistake: Leaving the tied rank empty instead of moving other players up, or splitting a banknote.
